Calprotectin is an essential biomarker for diagnosing and following up on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients suffering from IBD should have their fecal calprotectin (fCal) levels continuously monitored to receive the appropriate treatment.

Analyses of fecal samples involve a sampling extraction step routinely performed in the lab. This tedious and time-consuming work could greatly benefit from an improved workflow.

In this study, we have examined the usability of letting patients perform the sample collection themselves at home using a dedicated extraction device.

Letting patients perform the sample collection themselves at home could greatly improve the workflow of monitoring fCal levels.

However, it is important that the collection can be performed by patients without previous experience and that the precision of the test is not compromised by having non-lab personnel perform the sampling themselves.

Here, we have conducted a usability study according to FDA guidelines where 24 participants without previous knowledge of the procedure received a Calpro Easy Extract® kit, a simulated fecal sample, and a quick guide and were asked to perform the home sampling.

Questionnaires were used to determine the usability of the kits. In addition, separate performance studies were performed to compare the results to the standard weighing method.

The participants found the procedure easy to understand and performed the sampling correctly. These results indicate that the Calpro Easy Extract kit is a valuable tool for the patient home sampling of fCal.
