We appreciated your attendance at EMCHD last week

The European Meeting on Complement in Human Disease is a conference dedicated to topics in the field of complement, and we were lucky to get the unique opportunity to exhibit and learn from experts while networking with fellow global participants.

It was a terrific in-person conference where we had the chance to reconnect with KOLs, scientists, and pharma representatives. The meeting covered many interesting topics with exciting science, amazing complementologists, and great networking.

Svar Complement Excellence Award

This year was extra special to us since we could announce and hand out Svar's first annual award – the Svar Complement Excellence Award.

Two grants, each worth €20.000, were handed out to support persons working on projects within the complement field. The two well-deserved winners of this year were Prof. Lubka Roumenina and Dr. Christoph Schmidt, respectively.

Prof. Roumenina

Prof. Roumenina is based in Paris, France, and is focused on research in two directions within the complement field: Heme-mediated complement activation and exploring the non-canonical and cascade-unrelated functions of complement proteins, especially within cancer and in the intracellular compartment. The latter is an emerging and somewhat controversial field in which she is a pioneer.

Apart from her academic research, Prof. Roumenina is also involved in teaching and training future scientists, both as a lecturer at various universities in France as well as running workshops on training days during multiple conferences. In addition to this, she also contributes to the complement society by participating, presenting, and arranging meetings.

Dr. Schmidt

Dr. Schmidt is based in Ulm, Germany, and has dedicated much time to understanding complement C5 as well as Factor H and exploring the crosstalk between specific complement molecules. Dr. Schmidt has extensively looked at C5 and anti-C5 therapies, looking into what contributes to the lack of response in treatments and how to overcome these challenges.

The research has the potential to redefine some of the mechanical foundations upon which the complement cascade is organized. Besides his scientific output, Dr. Schmidt is involved in various complement platforms nationally in Germany and internationally and is also the new president of the European Complement Network (ECN). He is also regularly invited as a speaker to various symposia to present and educate fellow scientists and physicians on complement topics.

We're grateful for the well-arranged EMCHD 2022 and want to extend our thanks to the EMCHD organizing committee, all speakers, poster presenters, delegates, and other sponsors and exhibitors.

We are looking forward to meeting you next time!
