DIAGNOSTIC TEST 831

VGKC Antibodies (IgG)

Diagnostic test for antibodies against VGKC. For suspicion of autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic symptoms.

Indication

Suspicion of autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic symptoms

Sample material

Serum

  • Minim. volume: 0,5 mL

CSF

  • Minim. volume: 0,5 mL

Transport

  • Within Sweden: room temperature
  • International: cold

Method

RIA

Reference interval

Serum: <72 pmol/L negative

CSF: <2 pmol/L negative

Result

Results are reported as negative or positive with a concentration (pmol/L).

Interpretation

Antibodies against potassium channel complex are primarily seen in patients with neuromyotonia, Morvan's syndrome, autoimmune encephalitis, or idiopathic epilepsy. These antibodies are often directed to the potassium channel-associated proteins CASPR2 (contactin-associated protein-2) and LGI1 (leucine-rich, glioma inactivated protein 1), and further analysis of these specificities is recommended.

In serum, the relevance of antibodies with levels below 300 pmol/L is uncertain. In autoimmune encephalitis, the antibody level in serum is often over 300-500 pmol/L.
