DIAGNOSTIC TEST 090

Islet Cell Antibodies

Diagnostic test for antibodies against islet cells. For suspicion of risk of developing type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Indication

Suspicion of type 1 diabetes (T1D)

Sample material

Serum

  • Minim. volume: 0,5 mL

Transport

  • Within Sweden: room temperature
  • International: room temperature

Method

Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF)

Reference interval

<1:5 negative

Result

Results are reported as negative or positive with a titer.

Interpretation

Approximately 70-90% of patients diagnosed with T1D, are positive for antibodies against Islet cells. Antibodies can be detected several years before diagnosis and are a strong predictor of future development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Islet cell antibodies comprise of a heterogeneous group of antibodies that are directed against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65), tyrosine phosphatase-related islet cell antigen 2 (IA-2), zinc transport protein ZnT8, and other untill now unknown antigens.
