Interpretation

Antibodies against streptococci can be detected after infection with beta-haemolytic streptococci group A and may be of some value in suspected rheumatic fever, acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APGN), or erythema nodosum. The antibody levels begin to rise about 1 week after the infection and reach their highest value after 3-5 weeks. Two samples at an interval of at least 4 weeks are recommended to determine the seroconversion. Positive anti-streptolysin-O is found in 80% of patients with rheumatic fever or acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APGN).
