Result

Results are reported as negative or positive with a titer.

Interpretation

Smooth muscle antibodies (SMA) is a marker for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1 and a positive reaction is often observed in patients at the time of diagnosis. The antibody levels decrease during immunosuppressive treatment and a low positive SMA level can also be found in about 5% of healthy individuals.
